Nigeria’s power generation over 4600MW – Igali

currently generates over 4600 megawatts of electricity, the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Power,Mr. Godknows Igali has said.
Igali made the disclosure to State House correspondents when his Ministry briefed President Muhammadu Buhari on its activities at the Presidential Villa yesterday.
He said the major challenge now was the evacuation of the generated power to end users as this was adversely affecting the consumers.
Igali said the country has consistently maintained over 4,500 mega watts for the past two months.

“We are doing over 4600 megawatts of power on the grid and we can do better. But then this is a big improvement from about 3,000. Other times when we attain 4,000mw because of pipeline disruptions we go down to about 2000mw. We have consistently in the past two months been doing over 4,500mw and now reaching close to 4,700mw,” he said.

He however added that the government was tracking the Distribution Companies (DISCOS) to ensure that what is needed at the distribution level is done.

In a related development, the recently concluded power infrastructure upgrade at Egbin power Plc, Nigeria’s largest power generation plant, may be paying off afterall as the generation plant for the first time in eight years hit 1,100 megawatts as at July and has sustained the feat till now.

The development may have been responsible for the steady improvement in supply of electricity currently being witnessed, with the power generation plant producing about one –third of total power generated in the country.

Recall that eight years ago, the plant hit the 1,000MW mark for barely two hours and never attained it again until now, according to the company.
